Gov.UK Archive Check

Index

What this is

Gov.UK Archive Check installs a one-click bookmarklet: a bookmark that runs a tiny script. While you're reading any web page, click it and a new tab lists every archived snapshot of that page in a public web archive. Useful when a gov.uk guidance page, Home Office policy or country-information note has changed and you need the version that applied on a given date.

How to use it

  1. On the Install tab, drag the button onto your bookmarks toolbar (once).
  2. Browse to any page: e.g. a Home Office guidance page.
  3. Click the bookmark: a new tab lists every captured snapshot, by date.

How the URL works: the */<url> form lists all captures; the no-date form redirects to the most recent capture.

Archive service

The UK Government Web Archive (The National Archives) has the deepest coverage of gov.uk and other UK public-sector sites. The Wayback Machine (Internet Archive) covers the wider web. Your choice is saved in this browser (localStorage, key ifyi_archive_service) and rebuilds the Install-tab button + snippet.
